Level 7 is one of the least understood qualifications in UK education, partly because its name says nothing about its level to anyone outside the UK system. In fact it sits at master’s level, and for working professionals it is often a more practical route than applying straight to a master’s degree.

What Level 7 means

UK qualifications sit on a framework of levels. Level 6 is an honours bachelor degree. Level 7 is master’s level, which is where a Level 7 Diploma sits.

So a Level 7 Diploma is not a stepping stone below a bachelor. It is postgraduate study, taught and assessed at the same academic level as a master’s.

How the credits work

The NCC Education Level 7 Diploma in Business Management (L7DBM) is worth 120 credits, made up of units worth 20 credits each at master’s level.

You can take a single unit to earn a postgraduate unit certificate, or complete six units for the full diploma. That modularity is the point: you can start smaller than a full master’s commitment.

Where it leads

The L7DBM is recognised as suitable entry onto an MBA top-up, which is how many holders convert the diploma into a full master’s award without repeating what they have already studied.

That progression is the reason the qualification exists, and it is worth confirming the specific top-up route before you enrol rather than after.

Who it actually suits

  • Graduates who want postgraduate study but are not ready to commit to a full master’s at once.
  • Experienced managers whose track record is stronger than their paper qualifications.
  • Professionals who need a qualification that can be studied alongside full-time work.
  • Anyone who wants a postgraduate award from a UK Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation.

The Level 4 and 5 comparison

Level 4 and Level 5 diplomas are a different proposition entirely. Together they equal 240 UK credits, which corresponds to years one and two of a bachelor degree and unlocks direct entry to a final-year top-up.

If someone offers you a "diploma" without saying which level, that number is the first thing to ask for.

Common questions

Is a Level 7 Diploma the same as a master’s degree?
No. It sits at master’s level on the UK framework and is worth 120 credits, but it is a diploma, not a master’s degree. It is commonly used as entry onto an MBA top-up.
How many units make up the L7DBM?
Six units of 20 credits each, totalling 120 credits. A single unit earns a postgraduate unit certificate.
Who awards the L7DBM?
NCC Education, a UK awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual.
